Open Data in the Age of Exponential Science

Filed under: Academia,   Science — Geoff @ 7:56 pm

I’ve read a number of books and articles by Glyn Moody, who tends to cover technology (e.g., Linux).

I stumbled across an article by him on his blog: Open Data in the Age of Exponential Science which references a recent Nature article Science in an exponential world. (Well, the article is from March, but considering the [...]

Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Research

Filed under: Academia,   Science — Geoff @ 4:12 pm

After writing about specialization and tenure, particularly in the context of scientific history, it was interesting to read a recent interview with the head of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Arden L. Bement, Jr.

Bemet discusses the NSF’s strategic plan, future goals, and context in the overall U.S. government and society.

Among those who said they would not like to be scientists, [...]

Pop Goes the Science Song

Filed under: Academia,   Science — Geoff @ 3:26 pm

It really is a small world sometimes. Last week, I came across an article about “science songs” by Wired News. The article focused on Dr. Greg Crowther, a lecturer at the University of Washington who uses a bunch of science-related songs in his lectures.

I think it’s great that Greg includes songs in his lectures — [...]

Review: The Wisdom of Crowds

Filed under: Academia,   Reading,   Science — Geoff @ 4:42 pm

It’s been a while… and I’m back with a quick book review. My father suggested I read The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki. Since I don’t have much time at all for “easy reading” (vs. research articles), it took me quite some time to finish.

I liked the book, although I think it falls into [...]
