Recruitment

Filed under: AcademiaChemistry — Geoff @ 6:59 pm

One of the challenges as a new professor is that you’re starting everything from scratch. Right now, I have no graduate students at all. (In this department, graduate students do not typically join a group until January.)

So I’m recruiting.

Which means if you’re interested in graduate study in chemistry starting in fall 2008, I can make some strong recommendations. The Hutchison Group is involved in a range of electronic materials. We build materials from individual molecular subunits — literally from the ground up. This includes thin-film transistors, materials for light-emitting diodes, solar cells, etc. Please take a look at our research projects.

Our department at the University of Pittsburgh has strengths in collaborative research, drug discovery, pioneering spectroscopic techniques, and computational chemistry. Faculty in the department are active in many interdisciplinary programs and institutes, including the joint Pitt-Carnegie Mellon Computational Biology program, the University of Pittsburgh Drug Discovery Institute, the McGowen Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the Petersen Institute for NanoScience and Engineering.

I’ve honestly been really impressed by Pittsburgh as a whole. It’s a relatively small city, which means it has a low cost of living, a lot of culture and recreation. It’s been rated as one of America’s Most Livable Cities.

Will there also be opportunities to get involved with the development of one of the most popular open source projects in chemistry, Open Babel? Or the next generation of molecular visualization software, Avogadro? Also, can I do a second PhD? :-)

    Noel,

I’m sure there will be opportunities to work on software. I’m intending to write about that soon (i.e., why do I bother writing chemistry software?).

Certainly we’d love to have you come out and visit and talk about Open Babel or Avogadro, but I don’t think you’d need to do another chemistry Ph.D. :-)

Hi I an currently in my final semester of a Nanoscience degree and have enrolled for Hounors for 2008. I have already compleated a stydy contract on researching, manufacturing and charachterisation of conductive polymers (polypyrrole). My hounors project for next year is based on the evolution of the study contract. I have had a strong interest in organic light emmitting diodes in particular and would be very keen to expand my knowledge in this feild.
My undergrad background covers primarily of Nanotechnology and Chemistry, as well as some biology, maths and education (science communication).
