It’s Official

Filed under: AcademiaGeneral — Geoff @ 5:45 pm

Yes, it’s official. Starting in September 2007, I will be an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh.

The last few months have been extremely busy with travel and interviews. No, I didn’t fall off the map or decide to give up this website. In fact, the website is due for an overhaul.

Great news, indeed! Is this just a teaching position, or research too? And what’s the topic that you’re going to cover? And, what’s burning on my tongue, how will this affect OB and BO in general? Any ODOSOS in your new position?

    Well done Prof!

    Egon,

Thanks, this is both teaching and research. (That’s the typical combination for science here in the US.) My group webpage will hopefully be up soon, but we will focus on materials chemistry.

As for Open Babel, Blue Obelisk, and Open Data, Open Standards, Open Source (all your abbreviations!) … well, I’ve mostly done these as “side projects.” I certainly see them as important tools in getting my research accomplished and a great benefit to the community at large. If anything, I think I’ll be able to funnel more attention and people towards these directions. I’m also hoping to gain at least some grant money towards improving software tools like these.

    Time will tell!

That’s great. My guess is that this turn of events will severely hamper the development of ChemSpotlight though. We’re all still anxiously awaiting the cdx format support. Still, thanks for all the work and good luck.
