Blue Obelisk at the ACS Fall Meeting ‘06

Filed under: Blue ObeliskChemistry — Geoff @ 5:53 pm

Starting at last year’s American Chemical Society national meeting in spring 2005 in San Diego, CA, the Blue Obelisk movement of open chemistry was started.

This fall, many of us were again at an ACS national meeting and it was wonderful to meet again in person. The progress at developing open source chemistry software, open data, and open standards is significant. Several talks I attended mentioned Blue Obelisk software by name, several chemistry blogs covered the event, including some from the ACS itself.

I’d also like to thank Peter Murray-Rust for starting a series of Blue Obelisk awards. This year, he took it upon himself to hand out three: to Bob Hanson (for contributions to Jmol), Christoph Steinbeck (contributing to CDK), and myself (for contributions to Open Babel).

The actual award might be a little purple, rather than blue, but I’m honored. I owe much to the many contributors to Open Babel. 2006 Blue Obelisk Award

Discussions over dinner were more extensive, and I’ll cover that in another post.
