University Of Oregon: Green Chemistry

Filed under: Chemistry — Geoff @ 11:57 pm

Last week, the University of Oregon released a cool database of “green chemistry” materials for chemistry educators, GEMs

Green chemistry is the redesign of chemical transformations and processes to reduce or eliminate the use of materials that are hazardous to human health and the environment.

I think it’s fantastic to see more information on green chemistry for intro-level classes for both colleges and high school level classes. The general opinion of the chemical industry is not necessarily “environmentally-friendly,” but that doesn’t need to be true — that’s the point of environmental chemistry research and green chemistry processes. And the great thing about intro-level chemistry classes is that they’re really the “public face” of the field. Many, many people take “general chemistry 101″ or something similar.

Why not help them see some of the interesting areas of chemical research today? Green Chemistry, Nanoscience, Biochem, Materials…
