Science Needs Help

Filed under: Science — Geoff @ 9:18 pm

Just after posting about Quantum Diaries, I check the news and see an article on science in society in The Independent.

(via NanoBot)

The writer’s three wishes, at least as I understand them, come to:

  1. Educating others that basic science is “universal” and supposedly free of ethical issues until it is applied. (I’m not sure I agree 100%.)
  2. Making the “best” information on scientific issues available for public debate.
  3. Integrating scientists more into public and cultural life.

However, when the first sentence in the article is “science needs your help,” it implies a lot. Language is powerful — if you want to break down barriers between science and policy, do you really want to start off by implying that science (and scientists) are separated from society?

We need to find a way to bring the general public and scientists closer together so that they can understand each other better, helping to lead to sensible decisions about both science and those applications of it that affect our lives.’.
