Running in 2005

Filed under: PersonalRunning — Geoff @ 11:45 am

Well, there’s good news and bad news for my running fitness in 2005 so far.

Bad news first: I’m not even in the same shape I was in high school. Yesterday at an indoor track meet here in Ithaca, I could only muster 10:28 for the 2 mile and 4:36 for the 1500m. (Results here) Eons ago, I’d end up running the mile, the two mile, both after running the 4×800m relay and still easily beat those times.

The good news?

Last year at this time, I’d run about 5 times since the Chicago Marathon in October while I finished up my Ph.D. dissertation. I ran about 5-10 more times between the middle of January and the middle of February while I defended and moved out to Ithaca. So by comparison, I’m in much better shape than I was last year. (Unfortunately, that’s not saying much.)

By the way, for Eph alumni… Chris Garvin ‘03 had a pretty solid race, coming in 3rd in the 2-mile. Unfortunately, the top 4 in the race (I was really 5th) ran a lap short because of a miscommunication. But Chris, who’s at Cornell for a Ph.D. program in geology is in pretty good shape and aims to run some faster track races later this winter.
