A Diamond Is Not Forever

I don’t watch much TV, but of course since it’s December, there are lots of jewelry commercials. I just saw the “A Diamond Is Forever” bit by DeBeers.

As a chemist, this has always bugged me. A diamond is not forever–the most stable form of carbon is graphite. So much for truth in advertising. A diamond isn’t even the most expensive form of carbon–why not a buckyball or carbon nanotube ring?
